The following words about 'The Happy House’ were written for our FIRST Open House during
the 2005 Brighton Festival but they still give you a taste of what you may experience when you visit us.

We are based in the Garden Flat (Flat 5) - down the steps to the left of the main house
- at number 22 Third Avenue in Hove. Third Avenue is just opposite Hove Town Hall.

Why the ‘Happy House’? One person I met recently said, “The Happy House! Aren’t all artists miserable and angst-ridden?
What a silly name!” We don’t think so, as, I’m sure, nor do many artists! We hope that ‘The Happy House’ will lift visitors
and give them a feeling of relief from day to day life - and the exhaustion of visiting so many fascinating open houses
- as well as give them a chance to smile and relax in our lovely garden.

Mr and Mrs Happy (Tony and Helene) - click here to view Tony's Galleries and here to view Helene's Gallery
met less than three years ago (and are soon to be married!) and have been inspiring and
exciting each other ever since. In 2004 we visited over 100 open houses and were fascinated by seeing so many
varied types of work, meeting so many varied types of people (worth of a novel in itself!)
and getting the chance to nose around and see how other people live.
(Come on, this is England and all part of the fun of Open House trails!)

At first we thought of joining one of the existing houses and squeezing in a few works but then,
based on comments from family and friends, realised that where we lived
was unique and an ideal backdrop for displaying artworks and that,
for our first year, we would go it alone. This was very successful with over 1,000 visitors and
from 2006 we are delighted to have joined the 'HOVE' ARTS Trail
and hope to welcome many NEW visitors.

We are a cross between an art gallery, bizarre bazaar and a lovely home.

During the Open ‘House’ you will pass down our hall of black and white floral images and
new work from our Indian Travels as well as many other images to our main room displaying new LARGE A1 sized flowers
available as photographs and canvases and lots of new pastels from Helene, mainly of the human body.

Then there is our ‘Greek Restroom’ showing photos of our Travels in Greece, featuring Greek Windows and
some of the cats that we met! These were incredibly popular last time.

Our South-facing and, hopefully, sunny garden is fascinating with many found objects and
small sculptures interspersed with fascinating planting. Sam, the dog will not follow
your around the garden this year as he kept 'disappearing' last year and is staying with Helene's mum
during the Open Weekends! He can be seen by appointment - and still answers his e-mails.
We are delighted to be featuring one of the sculptures from the Stables Studios
in Namrik Mews, Hove - one of OUR favourite open houses - don't miss it.
You can sit in the garden and enjoy a drink and maybe some cake before visiting the two garden studios:

‘The (le) Chateau’ - with a large selection of assorted photographs including the, ever popular,
Buddhas as well as some of Helene’s flowers in pastel.
And
‘The Beach Hut’ featuring five panoramic photographs of Brighton and Hove.

We hope that visitors like some of what we have to offer.
If you want to own any you will find that all of the artworks are affordable
- and available framed, just mounted or on canvas.
With Tony’s background in design and publishing we have produced a good selection
of our own home-produced cards, some of which are original pastels from Helene
as well as reproductions of our work, and there are even some unique,
one-off, never to be repeated
original giclee posters from A4 size up to A1 and beyond - the longest being over eight feet long!

Putting on an Open House is an adventure that fills us both with joy and trepidation.
It’s fun living in an art gallery and now others can have a look too.

There’s a lot to see so come prepared to linger and come again.

We are open from 11.00 until 6.00 on each of the four weekends
Put us near the top of your list when you are trailing around Hove."
